Fayetteville Man Dies in In-Custody Incident

Lawrence Artis, a 29-year-old man involved in an in-custody incident on October 2, has died, according to the Fayetteville Police Department. The incident occurred when officers responded to a shots fired notification in the 6900 block of Cliffdale Road. Artis, a convicted felon, was found with a firearm, which he was prohibited from possessing.

While handcuffed, Artis managed to access another firearm and shot himself. He was immediately transported by Lifeflight to the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. The autopsy conducted by the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Artis’ time of death as 11:39 p.m. on Friday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
