Father and Son Arrested in Foiled Terrorist Attack Plot in Toronto

Canadian police have successfully thwarted a planned terrorist attack in Toronto, resulting in the arrest of a father and son duo. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Wednesday that 62-year-old Ahmed Eldidi and his 26-year-old son, Mostafa Eldidi, were apprehended on Sunday at a hotel in Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto. The pair is accused of plotting a “violent, serious attack” in Canada’s largest city, allegedly on behalf of or under the direction of the Islamic State group.

Both Ahmed and Mostafa Eldidi are now facing charges of terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder. According to Matt Peggs, assistant commissioner at the RCMP, the men were in the “advanced stages” of planning the attack. The suspects are residents of the Toronto area, as confirmed by the police.

Authorities first became aware of the planned attack in early July, prompting a month-long investigation. The police described the investigation as “fast-moving” and are currently working to determine the intended target, which is currently under a publication ban. The exact nature of the threat remains undisclosed.

In addition to the terrorism-related charges, the Eldidi duo is also facing weapons charges after being found in possession of an axe and a machete. However, the police have assured the public that there is no further risk at this time.

“The RCMP federal police take all threats to our national security very seriously,” stated Mr. Peggs. “This was an imminent threat, and we were able to prevent serious injuries or loss of life.”
