Escaped Missouri Inmate Captured in Pennsylvania; Second High-Profile Arrest in a Week

Mario Che-Tiul, an inmate who escaped from Barry County Jail in Missouri, was captured in Chester County, Pennsylvania on Thursday. The arrest came just over a week after another high-profile escapee, convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante, was apprehended in the same area, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Che-Tiul was arrested around 1:30 p.m. local time at a residence in Avondale on Gap Newport Pike. Acting on information that the fugitive might be at the location, U.S. Marshals surrounded the apartment and apprehended Che-Tiul without incident. He had been hiding in Pennsylvania after finding work as a laborer.

Robert Clark, from the U.S. Marshals, stated that Che-Tiul was the last of several inmates to be recaptured after a violent escape from Barry County Jail, during which two correctional officers were choked unconscious. Che-Tiul was initially booked into the jail last December on molestation and incest felony charges and was considered “armed and dangerous” by the Barry County Sheriff’s Office.

The fugitive investigation was a multi-agency effort involving the U.S. Marshals Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force, Immigration Customs Enforcement, and the Chester County Criminal Investigative Division.

Clark mentioned that the search for Cavalcante, who had escaped from Chester County Prison on August 31, temporarily shifted their focus from Che-Tiul. Cavalcante was convicted for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and was captured in South Coventry Township after an intense two-week manhunt involving local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Che-Tiul is now held at Chester County Prison—the very facility from which Cavalcante had escaped—and awaits extradition back to Missouri. He has been charged as a fugitive of justice.

According to Clark, in the past five months, the U.S. Marshals have successfully captured four prison escapees, underscoring their efficacy in locating individuals who attempt to evade justice.

Meanwhile, heightened concerns remain among Chester County residents following the recent string of jailbreaks. Last week, nine teens also escaped from Abraxas Academy, a juvenile detention center in Morgantown, Berks County, and were subsequently recaptured.
