The investigation began when authorities received a tip-off about a suspicious individual posing as an FBI agent and targeting vulnerable senior citizens. The imposter would contact elderly individuals, informing them that their bank accounts had been compromised. To rectify the situation, the victims were instructed to withdraw all their money and hand it over to the fake FBI agent.

On Tuesday, January 30, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received information that the suspect would be arriving at a residence on Hazel Lane in Troutman. Swiftly responding to the call, deputies set up surveillance around the property, ready to pounce on the imposter.

As anticipated, the suspect arrived at the victim’s home and engaged in conversation with the homeowner. However, little did he know that law enforcement was closing in on him. The man was swiftly apprehended and identified as 62-year-old Bin Zhu, hailing from Sandy Springs, Georgia.

During the subsequent investigation, Zhu shockingly confessed to his intentions of collecting money and revealed the presence of narcotics in his vehicle. Law enforcement wasted no time in searching the suspect’s car, where they discovered a staggering $3,890 in cash. But that wasn’t all; several vials containing cocaine and ecstasy were also seized, further exposing the depths of Zhu’s criminal activities.

Following his arrest, Bin Zhu was promptly taken into custody and is currently being held without bail at the Iredell County Detention Center. The authorities commend the homeowner for her quick thinking and urge others to trust their instincts and report any suspicious activity.
