Elderly Man Arrested for Impersonating Peace Officer and Conducting Unauthorized Traffic Stops

An elderly man, identified as Steven Sawhill, 70, of Canyon Lake, was apprehended by authorities on Thursday for allegedly impersonating a peace officer and conducting unauthorized traffic stops in Riverside County. Witnesses reported that a man driving a white Ford Crown Victoria equipped with emergency lights was seen pulling over unsuspecting drivers in the vicinity of Canyon Lake, near Lake Elsinore. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department promptly responded to the reports and initiated an investigation.

According to officials, the suspect, Sawhill, was observed flashing a badge that bore the words “agent” and “California” during the traffic stops. The motive behind his actions remains undisclosed at this time. However, authorities have charged Sawhill with impersonating a peace officer, false imprisonment, and vehicle code violations related to the unauthorized use of emergency lights on his vehicle.

Law enforcement officers successfully located the Crown Victoria in question and subsequently arrested Sawhill. In addition to the charges mentioned, he was found to be in possession of various fraudulent identification cards. The Riverside sheriff’s Lake Elsinore Station has urged anyone with further information or individuals who have had similar encounters with Sawhill to come forward and contact them at (951) 245-3300.

  1. While it is concerning that an elderly man was impersonating a peace officer and conducting unauthorized traffic stops, it is important to consider the underlying reasons behind his actions. Perhaps Steven Sawhill felt a sense of powerlessness or frustration with the current state of law enforcement in his community. It is possible that he believed he was making a positive impact by taking matters into his own hands.

Instead of solely condemning Sawhill’s actions, we should also question the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing community concerns. This incident
