Duke University Graduate Student Fatally Shot in Durham Home

Durham police have identified the victim of a shooting that occurred on Monday morning as Angela Risi, a second-year graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts in Dance program at Duke University. The shooting took place at a home on Worth Street, resulting in Risi’s death and causing another woman to sustain gunshot wounds.

Duke Vice President for Communications, Frank Tramble, expressed condolences to Risi’s family and the Duke community, emphasizing the shock and sadness surrounding the tragic loss. Counselors are providing support to members of the dance program and anyone at Duke affected by the news.

According to Director of Graduate Studies in Dance, Sarah Wilbur, a suspect with no affiliation to Duke has been arrested in connection with the incident. Wilbur described Risi as kind and intelligent, expressing sympathy for her chosen and biological family members.

Local resident Daniela Rangel, who lives near the scene, expressed sadness at the frequency of such incidents and called for action from city officials to address the problem.

Durham police have stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident based on preliminary investigations. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.
