Driver Arrested in Fatal Crash that Killed Highlands Ranch Teenager

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that the driver involved in last week’s fatal crash, which claimed the life of a Highlands Ranch teenager, has been arrested. Thirteen-year-old Alex Mackiewicz was tragically killed while crossing the intersection of Venneford Ranch Road and Highlands Ranch Parkway on his way to Mountain Ridge Middle School on the morning of March 6.

The driver, identified as 52-year-old Ruben Amaro-Morones, was taken into custody on suspicion of several charges, including careless driving causing death, careless driving causing serious bodily injury, and failing to obey a traffic signal. According to the sheriff’s office, Amaro-Morones was traveling eastbound on Highlands Ranch Parkway in the far right lane when he approached the intersection. He had a red light but failed to stop, colliding with Mackiewicz and causing him to be thrown from his electric skateboard. The van driven by Amaro-Morones came to a stop on the opposite side of the intersection.

Investigators have determined that speeding was not a factor in the crash. Amaro-Morones was arrested on Wednesday and transported to the Douglas County Detention Facility.

Sheriff Darren Weekly expressed his condolences to Alex’s family and the entire Highlands Ranch community, acknowledging the impact of this tragedy. He emphasized the seriousness with which traffic safety is taken and pledged to continue working towards safer roadways through public education and traffic enforcement.
