Comedian and former “The Price is Right” host Drew Carey has been subpoenaed by the defense to testify in the murder trial of Dr. Amie Harwick, his former fiancé. Harwick, a popular Hollywood sex therapist, died on February 15, 2020, after falling 20 feet from her bedroom balcony. Gareth Pursehouse, her ex-boyfriend, is accused of her murder.
Prosecutors allege that Pursehouse broke into Harwick’s home, waited for her to return, and then strangled her before throwing her body off the balcony. A syringe filled with a lethal dose of nicotine was also found on the balcony. The defense argues that Pursehouse was suicidal and intended to use the syringe on himself, claiming that Harwick’s fall was accidental.
Carey had a text exchange with Harwick before her death, which he discussed in a 2022 interview with CBS’ “48 Hours.” While it remains uncertain if Carey will testify during the trial, his name is included on the defense’s witness list.
Legal experts have expressed concerns about the defense’s decision to call Carey as a witness, suggesting it may turn the trial into a circus. Attorney Mercedes Colwin stated that it would be challenging for the jury to accept the defense’s argument that Pursehouse attacked Harwick but did not kill her. Attorney Jesse Weber echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the difficulty of convincing the jury to accept such a claim.
