Avery Lewis, a 31-year-old resident of Dorchester, was arraigned on Tuesday in Dorchester District Court on a total of 12 charges related to the alleged shooting of a Boston Police officer. The incident occurred on Monday night, and Lewis was apprehended shortly after 9:30 p.m. According to authorities, he is accused of shooting the officer, who was fortunately wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.

Lewis now faces a range of charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, and trafficking cocaine. During his arraignment, Lewis pleaded not guilty to all charges. He has been ordered to be held without bail until a dangerousness hearing, scheduled for later this month.

The shooting incident took place on Esmond Street near Blue Hill Avenue and Franklin Park in Dorchester, as reported by the Boston Police Department. Prosecutors revealed in court on Tuesday that officers were dispatched to the scene following a call from a woman who reported Lewis being armed outside. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Lewis attempted to flee, resulting in a gunshot being discharged.

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox stated on Monday that the injured officer, who has not been publicly identified, has been serving on the force for less than two years. Cox described the officer’s condition as “doing well” and commended his bravery. Mayor Michelle Wu also expressed her gratitude for the officer’s dedication and highlighted the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families.

Avery Lewis has a prior history with law enforcement. In 2017, he was arrested for allegedly distributing drugs near a school. Additionally, court documents indicate that Lewis faced charges of armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon in 2009.
