Deputies Shoot Fleeing Carjacking Suspect After Chase in Pico-Union

Sheriff’s deputies from the East L.A. Station engaged in a pursuit of a suspect involved in a carjacking incident on Wednesday afternoon in Pico-Union. The chase, which began just before 2:30 p.m., lasted approximately 20 minutes and concluded at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Venice Boulevard. Video footage captured at the scene revealed the suspect’s gray Toyota Camry crashing into multiple vehicles and a light pole.

As the pursuit neared its end, the Toyota driver attempted to reverse into the patrol cruiser that had boxed the suspect in from behind. Despite the vehicle’s front tires emitting smoke, indicating an effort to accelerate, the driver leaned out of the window and extended an open hand. At precisely 2:51 p.m., an undisclosed number of deputies discharged their firearms, firing shots into the rear window of the Toyota. The rounds penetrated the car, resulting in five holes in the windshield and apparent blood splatter.

Following the conclusion of the gunfire, deputies approached the vehicle using a bulletproof shield and extracted an individual from the passenger side. The suspect was subsequently transported to an undisclosed hospital, and their current condition remains unknown.
