Decades-Long Las Vegas Mystery Solved: Linda Sue Anderson Identified as Jane Tropicana Doe

Authorities have finally solved a decades-long mystery surrounding the identity of a woman whose remains were discovered in southwest Las Vegas. The Metropolitan Police Department announced on Tuesday that the woman has been identified as Linda Sue Anderson, thanks to the use of familial DNA.

The story began on a fateful day in April 1993 when a biologist conducting a survey of desert tortoises stumbled upon a chilling scene near Tropicana Avenue and Durango Drive. Among the dirt and rocks, the biologist noticed a part of a handmade quilt. As he investigated further, he discovered human hair and detected the unmistakable odor of decomposition. Little did he know that this chance encounter would set in motion a relentless pursuit for justice.

The Clark County coroner’s office conducted an autopsy on the remains and determined that the woman had been a victim of homicide in the mid- to late-1991. The case was then assigned to the dedicated investigators of the Cold Case Section, who tirelessly worked to unravel the mystery surrounding the unidentified remains, which were given the nickname “Jane Tropicana Doe.”

For nearly three decades, the woman’s true identity remained a mystery. However, in February of last year, cold case investigators turned to Othram, a forensic genetic genealogy company, for assistance. Samples from Anderson’s body were provided to Othram, who, with the help of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and the FBI, began the painstaking process of contacting possible family members who had submitted their DNA.

Finally, on December 29, Othram delivered the long-awaited news to detectives: the person known as Jane Tropicana Doe had been positively identified as Linda Sue Anderson, also known by the last name Andrews. Anderson, who was 38 years old at the time of her disappearance, had been living in Henderson when her family lost contact with her after a phone call in June 1991.

While the identification of Linda Sue Anderson brings closure to her family, the circumstances surrounding her apparent murder remain shrouded in mystery. The investigation into her death is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

This groundbreaking development in the case of Jane Tropicana Doe serves as a testament to the advancements in DNA technology and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies. It is a reminder that no matter how much time has passed, justice will continue to pursue those responsible for heinous crimes.

As the investigation unfolds, the hope is that the truth behind Linda Sue Anderson’s tragic fate will finally come to light, bringing solace to her loved ones and closure to a chapter that has haunted Las Vegas for far too long.
