Deadly Shooting Mars Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl Parade; 1 Dead, 21 Injured

A tragic incident unfolded at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday, as gunfire erupted, leaving one person dead and at least 21 others injured. Bystanders quickly sprang into action, attempting to apprehend the suspected shooter as chaos ensued. Video footage obtained by ABC News captured the heroic act of Paul Contreras, who tackled the fleeing suspect along with other bystanders.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves confirmed that three individuals are currently detained and under investigation in connection with the shooting. Speaking at a press conference, Chief Graves described the incident as a “tragedy.” The shooting occurred west of Union Station, near the garage, as Chiefs fans were dispersing after the parade.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed his anger and disappointment, emphasizing that those attending the celebration should have expected a safe environment. The mayor, who was present at the parade with his wife and mother, was among the many who sought safety when the shots rang out.

The Kansas City Chiefs, in a statement, expressed their prayers and support for everyone affected by the shooting. They confirmed that all players, coaches, and staff members were accounted for and safe.

Approximately 600 officers from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department and 250 officers from outside agencies were present at the scene, ensuring the safety of the estimated 1 million paradegoers. The swift response of law enforcement and first responders was crucial in apprehending the suspects and providing critical care to the victims.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson commended the Kansas City Police and other first responders for their quick actions in taking the suspects into custody and providing aid to the victims. He expressed his condolences, acknowledging that the shooting had marred what should have been a joyous celebration.
