Deadly Bar Shooting Erupts Over Pizza and Bar Tab: Aurora Man Faces First-Degree Murder Charges

A seemingly ordinary morning at Rosie O’Reilly’s bar in unincorporated Wheaton took a deadly turn when an argument over pizza and a bar tab escalated into a fatal shooting. The accused, Michael Freund, an Aurora man, now finds himself facing first-degree murder charges as a DuPage County judge denied his pre-trial release.

The incident unfolded on Friday morning at approximately 8:40 a.m. Witnesses reported that a dispute erupted between Dexter Perkins, Freund, and two other men over a bill. Tensions quickly escalated, leading to a scuffle on the bar’s front porch between Perkins and one of the other men. It was during this altercation that Freund, seemingly out of nowhere, produced a 9 mm Glock from his jacket pocket and fired two warning shots into the air.

The shots reverberated through the air, causing panic and chaos among the patrons. However, the situation took a tragic turn when Perkins, undeterred by the warning shots, approached the other man involved in the scuffle. In a split second, Freund, standing by a wooden railing, aimed his weapon at Perkins and fired, striking him in the torso and face.

As the smoke cleared, Perkins lay lifeless on the ground, a victim of a senseless act of violence. Freund, seemingly aware of the gravity of his actions, swiftly stashed the weapon, which had been fired a total of 11 times, inside the center console of his truck. Law enforcement arrived at the scene promptly and took Freund into custody.

The investigation that followed revealed a chilling detail: Perkins had no prior connection to any of the men involved in the dispute. It was a chance encounter that ended in tragedy, leaving Perkins’ loved ones devastated and grappling with the sudden loss of an innocent man.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin expressed his condolences to Perkins’ family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact this senseless act of violence has had on their lives. As Freund awaits his next court appearance on January 18, the community remains in shock, grappling with the reality that a simple disagreement over pizza and a bar tab could lead to such a tragic outcome.

This article serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences that can arise from even the most mundane disputes. As the legal process unfolds, the community will undoubtedly seek justice for Dexter Perkins, a man whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
