A correctional officer at Smith State Prison in Glennville, Georgia, died on Sunday after being attacked by an inmate, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC). Officer Robert Clark, 42, was escorting inmates Layton Lester and another prisoner from the dining hall when Lester assaulted Clark from behind using a homemade weapon. Another inmate intervened to help Clark but was also injured by Lester.
Both Officer Clark and the assisting inmate were transported to local hospitals. Tragically, Officer Clark succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The inmate who assisted is currently hospitalized but is expected to recover.
GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver expressed condolences to Officer Clark’s family and friends, stating that the entire GDC team is mourning the loss of one of their own. The department will provide support to Clark’s loved ones during this difficult time.
The GDC has announced that Layton Lester will face charges for Officer Clark’s death, as well as the assault on the assisting inmate. Officer Clark had been working at Smith State Prison since April.
