Commander Kyoto Abdul Rashid, a member of the militant Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), has been charged with nine offenses, including the murder of a honeymooning tourist couple and their Ugandan aide in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. Rashid was captured earlier this month in a military operation that resulted in the deaths of six rebels.
According to court papers, Rashid is accused of causing the murder of David and Celia Barlow, a British-South African couple, and their Ugandan aide Eric Ayai. He is also charged with engaging in acts of violence to influence the government or intimidate the public, robbery, and belonging to a terrorist organization.
Rashid has been remanded to prison and is scheduled to appear in court on November 27. The ADF pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2019 and has been operating in eastern Congo since fleeing Uganda in the early 1990s.
The attack on the tourists occurred on October 17, and Islamic State claimed responsibility for it the following day.
