Colorado Springs Man Sentenced to Prison for Assaulting Officers During Capitol Riot

Jonathan David Grace, a 49-year-old resident of Colorado Springs, has been sentenced to two years in prison for his involvement in the assault on officers during the infamous Capitol riot. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia revealed that Grace was also ordered to serve three years of supervised probation and pay $7,000 in fines and restitution.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 6, 2021, when Grace joined a group of rioters attempting to breach a police line at the Lower West Terrace Tunnel entrance to the U.S. Capitol. Witnesses reported that he was among the crowd shouting, “Heave! Ho!” while locking arms and forcefully pushing against the officers. During this chaotic encounter, one officer was tragically crushed between a shield and a metal door frame.

After being expelled from the tunnel, Grace stood nearby as other rioters dragged a police officer out and viciously attacked him. Shockingly, he then returned to the tunnel, continuing to push against the police before being met with a dose of pepper spray. The authorities managed to apprehend Grace in Colorado on March 30, leading to his subsequent arrest.

The sentencing of Jonathan David Grace serves as a stern reminder that those who engage in acts of violence and aggression against law enforcement will face severe consequences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, along with the district court judge, made it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated.

As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Capitol riot, this case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. The justice system’s swift response sends a powerful message that those who seek to undermine the rule of law will face the full weight of the law itself.

The sentencing of Grace may bring some closure to the officers who endured the traumatic events of that fateful day. It also serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication displayed by law enforcement in protecting our democracy.
