College Hoopster Arrested in Washington Heights with Loaded Gun in Car

A college hoopster, Jeremiah Davenport, 25, who was in town for the NBA Draft, was arrested early Saturday in Washington Heights after police discovered a loaded gun in the car he was in, according to police sources. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. when officers noticed a black BMW X5 with tinted windows double parked at the northwest corner of Nagel Avenue and West 204th Street.

Davenport, a graduate senior guard for the University of Arkansas’ Razorbacks, was accompanied by another man, 24, inside the vehicle, as per police sources. Upon conducting the car stop, law enforcement officers detected the smell of marijuana emanating from the car. When asked for identification, Davenport failed to produce any, and police officers noticed a firearm in plain sight behind the passenger seat.

Both individuals were subsequently arrested, although the second man was later released after the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute him, according to police sources. Davenport now faces charges including criminal possession of a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of an ammo feed device, and tinted windows, as stated by the police.

Appearing in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday, Davenport was seen wearing a dark orange sweater with the phrase “selfish ways” written on it. His legal aid lawyer, Russel Novack, informed Judge Marva Brown that there were significant search issues with the case. Davenport was released on his own recognizance.

It is worth noting that Davenport has no prior convictions. However, he was previously arrested on a misdemeanor charge in September, related to a speeding ticket, after turning himself in to Fayetteville police, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

  1. It is disheartening to hear about incidents like this involving young athletes. It is crucial for athletes, especially those with promising careers, to make responsible choices and surround themselves with the right company. Carrying a loaded gun not only puts their own lives at risk but also jeopardizes the safety of those around them. This incident serves as a reminder that athletes, regardless of their talent or success, are not exempt from the law and should be held accountable for their actions. It is essential for sports organizations
