Clearwater, Florida Police Officer Arrested on Felony Charges Following On-Duty Incident

Clearwater Police officer Nicolas Paloma has been arrested on two felony charges after an on-duty incident that occurred on Clearwater Beach. Paloma is facing charges of sexual battery and false imprisonment in connection with the case, which took place in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 15, 2023.

According to the arrest documentation, Paloma allegedly stopped a 32-year-old female tourist for jaywalking in the roundabout area of the beach. He then offered her a ride and is accused of requesting and engaging in sexual acts with the woman in exchange for not citing her for jaywalking or charging her with disorderly conduct. The victim reported feeling unable to leave during the incident.

Chief Eric Gandy stated that Paloma attempted to hide his location during the incident. The incident came to light when police responded to an argument between the victim and her friend at a beach hotel. The police immediately launched an investigation and alerted the chain of command.

Detectives from the Crimes Against Children and Families unit took over the investigation, working diligently throughout Sunday and Monday. The investigation culminated in the arrest of Paloma earlier this afternoon. He is currently being booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

Chief Gandy condemned Paloma’s actions, stating, “What this officer did is reprehensible. He’s someone who took an oath to enforce the law, not break the law in an egregious way while wearing a badge and a uniform.” Paloma, who has been with the agency since 2018 and has no previous disciplinary history, has been placed on administrative leave.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information on similar cases is urged to contact Clearwater Police at 727-562-4385.
