The Casa Grande community is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Hailey Stephens, who was fatally shot at a house party early Sunday morning. A makeshift memorial with candles, flowers, balloons, and pictures has been set up outside her home, where loved ones have been gathering to offer support.
Hailey’s family is struggling with the loss, expressing profound grief and disbelief. Her mother, Vanessa Stephens, described Hailey as a “superstar” known for her bright personality. “Loved to smile, laugh, have fun with her friends,” Vanessa said, conveying the shock of her daughter’s sudden passing. “We’re in the state of she’s not walking through the door, that she’s not coming home,” she added.
The shooting occurred at a vacant home in Casa Grande, where Casa Grande Police reported that a gunfight broke out among 50 to 60 party attendees. Investigators estimate that at least 60 shots were fired, with more than two shooters involved. Hailey was an unintended victim, caught in the crossfire by a stray bullet.
Hailey, a senior at Casa Grande Union High School, was at the top of her class, a member of the National Honors Society, FAA, and a cheerleader. She had secured multiple college scholarships and aspired to be an ASU cheerleader. Her cousin, Brittanie Hernandez, spoke highly of Hailey, expressing admiration and emphasizing that Hailey’s memory will never be forgotten.
As they mourn, Hailey’s family is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the police. “If you know Hailey, you know that she deserves justice,” Vanessa Stephens stated.
Another 17-year-old girl, reportedly a friend of Hailey, was also shot at the party but is expected to recover.
A candlelight vigil in Hailey’s honor is scheduled for Friday at the high school. Additionally, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist the family with funeral and medical expenses.
