Cage The Elephant Lead Singer Matt Shultz Reveals Mental Health Crisis Leading to Arrest

Cage The Elephant lead singer, Matt Shultz, has opened up about his mental health crisis that preceded his arrest last year for possession of two loaded guns. In a statement shared on Instagram, Shultz expressed gratitude for his arrest, stating that it ultimately saved his life. Following the arrest, he spent two months in the hospital and underwent months of outpatient treatment.

Shultz revealed that over the past three years, he had unknowingly been battling a severe mental health crisis. He attributed his descent into psychosis to an adverse reaction to a prescribed medication, describing it as an iatrogenic response. The musician acknowledged the unwavering support of his bandmates, community, and, most importantly, his wife Eva Ross, who stood by his side and played a crucial role in his recovery.

Expressing his gratitude for the love and support he received, Shultz thanked his wife for her unwavering love and credited professional treatment for helping him regain his grip on reality and fully recover. He acknowledged the hard lessons learned throughout his journey and expressed his humility and gratitude for the opportunity to share his message.

In January 2023, Shultz faced charges of criminal possession of firearms after the police discovered the guns in his room at the Bowery Hotel in Lower Manhattan. However, he managed to avoid jail time by pleading guilty to three charges of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon. As part of the plea deal, he was able to avoid incarceration.

Shultz’s attorney, Sanford Talking, emphasized that his client had worked diligently to put the case behind him and appreciated the chance to prove himself. Talking expressed confidence that such an incident would never occur again, allowing Shultz to move forward with his life and music.
