In a bizarre incident in Boulder, Colorado, a hapless thief carjacked a truck pulling a camper, unaware that a sleeping couple and their dog were inside. The couple, who woke up during the joyride, managed to alert the authorities and ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest.
The incident unfolded in the middle of the night when an unidentified individual broke into the pickup truck attached to a camper parked outside an apartment. Seizing the opportunity, the thief sped off, unaware of the slumbering couple and their canine companion inside the camper.
Remaining silent to avoid detection, the couple quickly contacted the police for assistance. Responding swiftly, law enforcement located the stolen vehicle around 3 a.m. and attempted to pull it over. However, the driver refused to comply, leading to a brief chase through the streets of Boulder.
The pursuit came to an end when the suspect turned onto a dead-end street, where police successfully apprehended him. Bodycam footage captured the moment of arrest, with the suspect claiming that he was merely “test driving” the stolen truck. The incredulous officer pointed out the presence of the owners in the back of the vehicle, to which the suspect denied any knowledge of their presence.
Upon opening the back door of the camper, police confirmed the couple’s safety, although they were understandably shaken by the ordeal. Fortunately, neither the truck nor the camper sustained any damage during the incident, according to a police spokesperson.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old David Bradley Metz, has a prior criminal record, including convictions for motor vehicle theft. He now faces charges of second-degree motor vehicle theft, two counts of reckless endangerment, vehicular eluding, carrying a concealed knife, and failure to appear in court for a previous theft case. Additionally, he has three previous arrests for motor vehicle theft, including one in Boulder earlier this year.
