A Brookline woman, Mary Sellitto, is set to be arraigned next week on charges of animal cruelty and misleading investigators, according to MSPCA Law Enforcement. The charges stem from two separate incidents involving dogs, one of which is a Golden Retriever puppy named Brooke.
In late January, Brooke was discovered in an emaciated state and in poor condition when she arrived at the MSPCA’s shelter. Rescuers described her as being in “bad shape.” Shortly after her arrival, the MSPCA sought the public’s assistance in identifying Brooke’s owner. The investigation led to the arrest of Mary Sellitto.
On February 2, another dog, described as “very underweight,” was found at Sellitto’s residence and subsequently removed. Both dogs have since been adopted and are reported to be in good health.
Sellitto is facing two counts of animal cruelty, which is a felony carrying a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. Additionally, she is charged with misleading investigators, a felony that could result in up to 10 years of imprisonment.
The arraignment is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on March 25 at Brookline District Court.
The MSPCA expressed gratitude for the public’s assistance in identifying Brooke’s owner and commended their law enforcement team for bringing the investigation to a conclusion.

I remember reading about a similar case in my local news a few years ago. It was heartbreaking to hear about the cruelty that some people are capable of towards animals.
In that particular case, a man was charged with animal cruelty after his neighbors reported seeing him mistreating his dog. The neighbors claimed they often heard the dog crying and whimpering in pain. When the authorities arrived at the man’s house, they discovered that the dog was severely malnourished and had several untreated injuries.
