Brazilian Soccer Team’s Mascot Accused of Sexual Harassment During Crucial Match

A female sideline reporter covering the Grêmio-Sport Club Internacional (Inter) match in Porto Alegre, Brazil, has accused Inter’s mascot, Saci, of sexually harassing her during the game. Gisele Kumpel, a reporter for Canal Monumental, alleged that Saci forcefully hugged her and made kissing noises after Inter scored the game-winning goal. Kumpel claimed that she could feel the mascot’s sweat through the costume during the unwanted embrace.

Video footage obtained by Brazilian news outlet GloboEsporte captured the incident, showing Kumpel walking behind the goal as Saci stood nearby, celebrating the late goal that secured Inter’s 3-2 victory over Grêmio. Kumpel stated that she gestured to push the mascot away but was unsuccessful. She also mentioned being the only female journalist working behind the goal and the sole target of the mascot’s strange gestures, including bending down and looking at her phone.

Following the match, Kumpel reported the incident to the local police station, which is now investigating it as a case of sexual harassment. Kumpel expressed her frustration, stating that such actions are what women in sports often endure while performing their jobs. She vowed to pursue the matter to prevent other women from experiencing similar situations.

Inter has cooperated with the investigation, providing all field footage from the game to the police. The employee responsible for wearing the Saci costume has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. In a statement, the club expressed confidence that the facts would be duly clarified by the authorities and assured their full cooperation.

The incident has sparked a conversation about the treatment of women in sports and the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Kumpel, despite the distress caused by the encounter, stated that she was doing fine and would not let fear deter her from her work.
