Berkeley Police Investigate First Homicide of 2024 Following Sunday Afternoon Stabbing

Berkeley Police are currently investigating the city’s first homicide of the year after a stabbing incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. The incident took place on the 1300 block of University Avenue, approximately 10 blocks west of UC Berkeley. At around 2:45 p.m., authorities received a distress call reporting a stabbing.

Officer Jessica Perry, spokesperson for the Berkeley Police, stated that officers promptly responded to the scene and swiftly apprehended an individual believed to be involved in the incident. Meanwhile, a victim was discovered nearby and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Berkeley Fire Department.

Homicide detectives have taken charge of the investigation, as they work to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing. Officer Perry confirmed that no other suspects are currently being sought, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety.

The incident remains under investigation, and the Berkeley Police are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Further details regarding the motive or any potential relationship between the suspect and the victim have not been disclosed at this time.
