Juliana Peres Magalhaes, a 23-year-old au pair from Brazil, has been arrested and charged in connection to the fatal shooting of Joseph Ryan, 39, in a Fairfax County residence. Ryan’s body was discovered on Feb. 24 shortly after 8 a.m. Another victim, Christine Banfield, 37, was found in the home with upper body stab wounds and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Although Peres Magalhaes faces second-degree murder charges for Ryan’s death, the investigation into Banfield’s stabbing continues with no charges filed. It emerged that Peres Magalhaes placed a 911 call claiming a friend was injured. Subsequently, a man, identified as Banfield’s husband, reported an unknown male intruder whom he had allegedly shot. However, police found no evidence of forced entry, and the husband was reportedly outside during the incident. Both victims were located in an upstairs bedroom, with only Ryan being acquainted with Banfield.
Despite the husband’s initial false statement to the police, he faces no charges at this time. Police Lt. Erin Weeks described the scene as “horrific” and confirmed that all involved individuals have been identified. The motive is still under investigation.
