In a disturbing incident that underscores the escalating violence faced by US Border Patrol agents amidst the ongoing Harris-Biden border crisis, an illegal migrant launched a vicious attack on a brave agent, leaving him with non-life-threatening injuries. The assault occurred on Mount Cristo Rey, a notorious smuggling route in Sunland Park, New Mexico, known for its lack of barriers, allowing migrants to easily evade capture and disappear further into the United States.
According to a statement from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the assailant was apprehended and subsequently taken to a local hospital. This incident is just the latest in a series of assaults on border agents, which have seen a significant rise since the beginning of the current financial year in October 2023. Federal data reveals that 413 border officials have been assaulted on the job during this period, with a total of 610 officers assaulted throughout the 2023 financial year, which concluded in September.
CBP recently issued a warning regarding the alarming surge in attacks on Border Patrol Agents, emphasizing the severe consequences of assaulting federal officers. A leaked agency memo obtained by The Post revealed another incident earlier this month, where a border agent was forcibly pulled off his patrol horse by an illegal migrant in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
Agents stationed along the El Paso sector, which encompasses New Mexico and West Texas, have reported experiencing assaults almost nightly in recent months. One officer described being overwhelmed by groups storming down from the mountain, physically assaulting agents as they desperately attempt to enter the United States. Another law enforcement source in the area noted an increase in violence coinciding with the rise in illegal border crossings.
Frustration mounts among Border Patrol agents as migrants often evade consequences for their actions. A Border Patrol source expressed their exasperation, stating that prosecution is often unlikely unless the agent sustains visible injuries. In the case of the agent being pulled off his horse, prosecutors opted for an illegal entry charge against the migrant but declined to pursue assault charges, as per the leaked memo. The US Attorney’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the case.
The El Paso sector has also become a preferred entry point for members of the violent Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela, who infiltrate the US and subsequently engage in criminal activities nationwide. In March, The Post exclusively captured a migrant riot at the El Paso border wall, where hundreds of migrants stormed the barrier and assaulted National Guard soldiers attempting to restore order. Over 100 suspected Tren de Aragua gang members were subsequently arrested.
Adding to the already tense situation at the border, Tren de Aragua recently issued a “green light” to its members, authorizing them to shoot US law enforcement officers. This development further underscores the need for heightened security measures and effective strategies to address the escalating violence and criminal activities along the US-Mexico border.
