Art Dealer Disinherits Estranged Husband, Leaves $1M to Ex-Lover in Will

Manhattan art dealer Brent Sikkema, who was brutally stabbed to death in his winter home in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, had disinherited his estranged husband, Daniel Garcia Carrera, from his multimillion dollar estate, according to his will. The will, written two years prior to his murder, explicitly stated that Carrera would inherit nothing, regardless of their legal marital status at the time of Sikkema’s demise.

Sikkema, 75, was a prominent figure in the art world and a principal in the renowned gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. His estate includes his private art collection, a 50% stake in the gallery, $1 million in bank accounts, and properties in multiple countries.

In addition to disinheriting Carrera, Sikkema left $1 million to another ex-lover, Carlos Ramos, who had emigrated from Cuba to the United States. The funds are to be used for a trust that will provide Ramos with an annual payment of up to $75,000 for life.

Carrera, who was still married to Sikkema at the time of his death, has hired an attorney to contest the will. Meanwhile, federal prosecutors have charged Carrera with lying in an attempt to obtain a new US passport for their son, Lucas, in an apparent bid to flee the country.

The murder suspect, Cuban national Alejandro Triana Prévez, allegedly told Brazilian authorities that Carrera had organized the hit, providing the key to Sikkema’s home and promising him $200,000. Carrera’s criminal attorney, Richard Levitt, declined to comment on the matter.

Sikkema’s will also specified that he be cremated, with his ashes scattered over his favorite places in the world, including the Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro and the beach waters off Santa Maria in Playa del Este, Havana.
