An American soldier, Gordon Black, who was arrested in Russia over a week ago, was reportedly stabbed by his Russian girlfriend during a heated argument that unfolded in front of his ex-wife and young daughter during a video call. The incident occurred several months prior to Black’s detainment and sheds light on the tumultuous relationship between the soldier and his girlfriend, Aleksandra Vashchuk.
According to Megan Black, Gordon’s soon-to-be ex-wife, the video call took a horrifying turn when her estranged husband engaged in a screaming match with Vashchuk. The situation escalated when Vashchuk allegedly clawed at Black’s face and brandished a knife, ultimately stabbing him. Megan, who witnessed the entire ordeal along with their 6-year-old daughter, described the distressing scene to Reuters.
While the Russian girlfriend’s name was not disclosed in the Reuters report, previous news articles have identified her as Aleksandra Vashchuk. The violent altercation occurred before Black’s arrest on theft charges in Vladivostok on May 2. Black, a staff sergeant stationed at Camp Humphreys in South Korea, had traveled to Russia without the Army’s permission, violating military regulations.
Melody Jones, Black’s mother, believes that Vashchuk lured her son to Russia and orchestrated his arrest on false charges. She alleges that the couple frequently fought and had a tumultuous relationship. Jones also revealed that Vashchuk had been sent back to Russia from South Korea, possibly due to paperwork issues.
Megan and Gordon Black were in the process of finalizing their divorce when he was arrested. The couple initially met in 2014 but experienced relationship troubles starting in 2018. Megan first learned about Vashchuk’s existence in January 2022 when she discovered photos of the couple on social media, with Vashchuk referring to Black as her husband. Megan and her daughter were unaware of Black’s presence in Russia and believed he was returning to Texas after completing his tour in South Korea. However, on the day of his arrest, he sent Megan a message informing her that he would not be coming home.
Megan faced difficulties in receiving child support payments until the Army intervened and began withholding a portion of Black’s paychecks for child support, as confirmed by her lawyer, Jeff Linick.
Efforts are underway to secure the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in March 2023, and former marine Paul Whelan, who has been detained since 2018.

While it is unfortunate that an American soldier, Gordon Black, was stabbed by his Russian girlfriend, it is important to consider the broader context of this incident. The author seems to focus solely on the actions of the girlfriend, painting her as the sole aggressor in the situation. However, it is crucial to recognize that arguments and conflicts in relationships are rarely one-sided.
Without knowing the details of the argument, it is unfair to place all the blame on the Russian girlfriend. It is possible that both parties
