An American basketball player, Mikayla Cowling, who plays for VBW Arka Gdynia, was assaulted and left with a head injury in a music club in Gdansk, Poland, according to officials and reports in Polish media. The incident occurred late Wednesday after a EuroCup women’s match where the Gdynia team defeated BCF Elfic Fribourg from Switzerland. Cowling was attacked near the women’s restroom by a security guard, according to the president of the Gdynia club, Boguslaw Witkowski. She sustained multiple blows to the head and was kicked while on the ground, resulting in a fractured orbital bone. Cowling is currently under observation at home and will undergo further tests next week.
The attacker, a 48-year-old man, was arrested on Friday, as confirmed by a police spokesperson. Gdynia Mayor Wojciech Szczurek expressed outrage over the incident, condemning violence and aggression. The Gdynia club and officials have extended their well wishes for Cowling’s recovery.
