The Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, Utah, was placed on lockdown following a large altercation involving 15 incarcerated individuals on Monday evening. According to a press release from the Utah Department of Corrections, preliminary investigations suggest that the altercation may have been gang-related and weapons were involved. As a result, five of the individuals involved were sent to a local hospital for assessment and treatment.
To ensure the safety of all individuals at the facility and maintain security, the Utah Department of Corrections has implemented a temporary lockdown at both the Central Utah Correctional Facility and the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City. During this time, incarcerated individuals will be confined to their assigned cells and dormitories, with limited movement permitted until a further review is conducted.
The identities of those involved in the altercation have not been released at this time. More information will be provided once the investigation is completed. The Central Utah Correctional Facility houses approximately 1,750 incarcerated males, while the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City houses approximately 2,200 incarcerated males and 400 females.
