An alleged drug dealer, Joseph Pisano, has been accused of taking over a Queens apartment following the death of the owner, Anneliese King, from an overdose. According to neighbors and law enforcement, Pisano managed to gain access to the Jamaica Estates home after meeting King at a nearby senior center. The deceased, a retired former administrative assistant, had been paying $1,451.40 per month for her fifth-floor one-bedroom unit on Ava Place.
Neighbors reported witnessing Pisano, who was seen using a walker, peddling narcotics from the apartment during late hours. Addicts would mistakenly ring King’s bell, looking for Pisano. The audacity of his alleged drug dealing activities put the lives of residents in jeopardy, causing outrage among the community.
Tragically, King was found dead in her apartment on May 20, having overdosed on heroin and fentanyl. Shockingly, Pisano returned to the apartment with another woman shortly after authorities removed King’s body, continuing to occupy the unit. The landlord, Herb Donner, filed a housing court suit, claiming that Pisano and the woman lived rent-free in King’s apartment for over two months.
The situation deteriorated further after King’s death, as the building became a hotbed of drug use and sales. Concerned residents wrote a letter to the building’s management, expressing their fear for their safety and property. Despite the complaints, the NYPD initially hesitated to take action, despite new state laws aimed at addressing squatter situations.
Donner eventually issued an eviction notice against Pisano and his companion, seeking the assistance of a Queens Housing Court judge to remove the unlawful residents. Pisano was finally apprehended during a raid on July 31, where law enforcement discovered drug paraphernalia, including a scale with cocaine residue, 32 vials of cocaine, 21 glassine envelopes containing heroin, and a ledger with names and cash amounts.
A woman named Kelly King, who may or may not be related to the deceased tenant, was also arrested and indicted on various drug charges. Pisano pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to nine months in Rikers Island. King, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia and received nine months of probation.
