Alec Baldwin, the renowned actor, has finally spoken out following the surprising decision by a New Mexico judge to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter case against him. In an emotional Instagram post on Saturday, Baldwin expressed his gratitude towards the numerous individuals who have supported him and his family throughout this ordeal. The 66-year-old actor shared a photo of himself in the Santa Fe courtroom, accompanied by his heartfelt message.
The dismissal of the case stems from the tragic incident that occurred on October 21, 2021, during the filming of the movie “Rust.” Baldwin was handling a prop gun that unexpectedly discharged, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ruled on Friday that the charges against Baldwin should be dropped due to evidence suggesting that the prosecution had withheld crucial ammunition information from the defense. Consequently, Baldwin cannot be recharged in relation to Hutchins’ death, effectively concluding the criminal proceedings against him.
While Baldwin may have been cleared of criminal charges, he is not exempt from potential civil litigation. Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents Hutchins’ parents and sister, emphasized during a press conference outside the courthouse that they will continue to fight for justice in the civil court. Allred previously read victim impact statements from Hutchins’ devastated family during the sentencing of on-set armorer Hannah Gutteriez-Reed, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year.
Allred expressed relief that her clients were spared from witnessing the distressing footage of the moments following the shooting, where medics were unable to save Hutchins’ life. Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna Hutchins, respected the court’s decision but hopes to see Baldwin held accountable in a civil judgment, according to his attorney.
A visibly relieved Baldwin was seen outside a Santa Fe restaurant on Friday evening, donning a more casual attire of a black T-shirt and blue. The “Saturday Night Live” regular was accompanied by his entourage, including his brother Stephen, as they enjoyed a meal.
