Affidavit and Digital Evidence Raise Questions in University of Idaho Student Murders

New details have emerged in the investigation of the November 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madson “Maddie” Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. An affidavit outlining the case reveals that DNA, cellphone records, and surveillance camera evidence link the accused murderer, Bryan Kohberger, to the crime. However, Kohberger’s defense attorneys argue in a court filing that there is no connection between their client and the victims.

Criminologist and CBS News consultant Bryanna Fox commented on the defense’s claim, stating that they are asserting that there is no motive or reason for the crime to have taken place, raising doubt in jurors’ minds.

Kaylee Goncalves’ parents, Steve and Kristi, believe they have evidence of a connection between Kohberger and two of the victims. They claim to have discovered “digital evidence” that allegedly shows Kohberger’s ties to the victims. The Goncalves family provided screenshots of an Instagram account they believe belonged to Kohberger, which included his profile and a list of people he was following, including Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves. However, the authenticity of this account has not been confirmed.

The Goncalves family further alleges that the Kohberger account had interacted with Maddie’s Instagram, liking several of her pictures. They noted that the account is no longer active and disappeared shortly after Kohberger’s arrest, coinciding with a “Celebration of Life” ceremony for Kaylee and Maddie.

Bryan Kohberger has pleaded not guilty, and a trial date has yet to be announced.
