A&E Docuseries Explores Secrets of the Hells Angels, Unveiling Dark Underbelly of the Outlaw Biker Gang

A new A&E docuseries, “Secrets of the Hells Angels,” delves into the hidden world of the notorious outlaw biker gang. Drawing inspiration from Hunter S. Thompson’s immersive experience with the Angels in his book “Hell’s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga,” the series aims to replicate the dangerous and gritty atmosphere that Thompson encountered over 50 years ago.

The Hells Angels, founded in 1948 in San Bernardino County amidst postwar disillusionment and rebellion, have long presented two contrasting public personas. While some members claim they are merely a fun-loving motorcycle club, the truth reveals a darker side characterized by murder, rape, and drug-running. The premiere episode, titled “Hell’s Agent,” focuses on the story of Jay Dobyns, a burly ATF agent who infiltrated the Angels in Arizona and faced the risk of losing his sanity and soul.

The episode begins with a violent brawl and shootout between the Hells Angels and their rival gang, the Mongols, at a Laughlin, Nevada casino in 2002. Dobyns, along with fellow agent Jenna Maguire posing as his partner, receives his assignment in the aftermath of this deadly confrontation. The intricate process of earning an official Angels patch is revealed, highlighting the paradoxical nature of an organization that claims to reject rules but imposes numerous regulations.

Dobyns recounts the audacious scheme that ultimately gained the gang’s trust. With the assistance of fellow ATF agents and some props from a local butcher shop, he stages the fake murder of a Mongol and takes credit for the kill. Such initiative is highly valued by the Angels, as they appreciate individuals who demonstrate their commitment to the gang’s code.

The episode showcases the standard A&E aesthetic, combining interviews with former members and chapter presidents, reenactments, and a steadily unfolding narrative. However, the real highlight lies in the exclusive ATF footage, offering a glimpse into Dobyns’ interactions with the Angels and the behind-the-scenes preparations for the staged Mongol murder.

Upcoming episodes, each lasting an hour, promise to explore intriguing subjects such as the Angels’ alleged plot to assassinate Mick Jagger, stemming from their involvement in the stabbing death of concertgoer Meredith Hunter at the infamous 1969 Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway. Additionally, the series will delve into the trials of Noel Barger, the ex-wife of Angels kingpin Sonny Barger.
