The accused driver involved in the tragic Fourth of July crash that claimed the lives of three pedestrians and injured several others is being held in protective custody, a decision that has sparked outrage among the loved ones of the victims. Daniel Christopher Hyden, a self-proclaimed addict and substance abuse counselor, remains incarcerated without bail following his arrest in connection with the deadly incident that unfolded in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As of now, a grand jury has not yet issued an indictment against Hyden, as revealed by prosecutors during a court hearing held in Manhattan on Wednesday.
Although Hyden did not appear in court for the hearing, family friends of Herman and Lucille Pinkney, two of the individuals who tragically lost their lives in the holiday horror, attended the proceedings and expressed their anger towards him. In response to the judge’s decision to place Hyden in protective custody, Kimberly Jackson, a close friend of Lucille Pinkney, confronted him, accusing him of cowardice. She exclaimed, “You’re hiding in protective custody? You’re supposed to be a man. That’s not being a man. You’re a freaking coward.”
Hyden, who authored a book titled “The Sober Addict,” now faces accusations of driving under the influence and causing the deaths of three pedestrians. Eyewitnesses claim that he recklessly drove a gray Ford F-150 through an intersection in the Lower East Side, careening over a sidewalk and into a group of people celebrating the Fourth of July in Corlears Hook Park. The devastating crash resulted in the deaths of Lucille Pinkney, 59, her son Herman Pinkney, 38, who resided near the scene of the incident, and Ana Morel, 43. Among the eight injured individuals were Jessica Pellot, Herman’s longtime girlfriend, and her 11-year-old son, Jakob Velazquez.
