9-Year-Old Girl Dies in Hit-and-Run Crash on I-680 in Concord

A tragic hit-and-run incident on Interstate 680 in Concord has claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl and left several others injured. The victim, identified as Danna Hernandez Tapia, was traveling in a car with her 32-year-old mother, sister, and two cousins when the accident occurred at the state Highway 242 divide. The incident took place at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Sunday.

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson Officer Adam Lane, the gray Mazda CX-9, driven by an unidentified individual, crashed into the car carrying Danna and her family. Following the collision, the driver of the Mazda fled the scene and is currently at large. Law enforcement agencies are actively searching for the suspect, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Danna tragically lost her life at the scene of the crash, while her mother, 13-year-old sibling, and 17-year-old female cousins sustained major injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, authorities have stated that all three survivors are expected to survive their injuries.

The Mazda, which overturned multiple times, came to rest on its roof after crossing a dirt median that separates I-680 from Hwy. 242. Several individuals who were not wearing seat belts were ejected from the vehicle during the violent crash. Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved in the incident, allowing the CHP to clear all freeway lanes within 30 minutes.

The CHP is appealing to the public for any information that may help locate the driver of the Mazda. While it is unclear whether the driver is a family member, authorities believe he is in his 30s. Unfortunately, a detailed description of the suspect is not available at this time.
