Police have apprehended a 62-year-old man, Sonny Tho Leu, on suspicion of committing three bank robberies within a span of approximately one hour in Temecula and Murrieta. The arrest took place in Murrieta after law enforcement officers stopped Leu’s vehicle. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reported that the initial robbery occurred on Tuesday morning at a bank situated on Margarita Road in Temecula.

Upon arriving at the bank at 11:51 a.m., deputies were informed by bank employees that an individual had passed a note to a teller, demanding money. Compliance ensued, and the suspect departed with an undisclosed sum of cash. Witnesses described the perpetrator as wearing a blue shirt and baseball cap, while carrying an orange bag.

While deputies were questioning individuals at the bank, they received information that a person matching the same description had just committed two additional bank robberies in Murrieta, employing a similar modus operandi. The Murrieta Police Department received a call at 12:19 p.m. reporting an armed robbery at a bank on California Oaks Road. According to a bank employee, the suspect, donning a black baseball cap and carrying an orange bag, presented a note demanding money while displaying a gun in his waistband. Once again, the teller complied, and the suspect fled the scene.

At 12:58 p.m., while officers and detectives were actively searching for the suspect, another bank robbery was reported on Hancock Avenue in Murrieta. In this instance, a bank employee handed over an undisclosed amount of money, and the suspect swiftly made his escape.

Authorities promptly identified the suspect’s vehicle and relayed the details over police radio. Officers successfully intercepted the car as the suspect pulled into a driveway in Murrieta. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded evidence linking Leu to all three robberies. Consequently, he was taken into custody and is now facing charges of bank robbery and criminal threats.
