5 University Students Found Deceased in Vehicle in Guanajuato, Mexico

Authorities in north-central Mexico reported on Monday the discovery of five university students’ bodies inside a vehicle on a dirt road near the city of Celaya, Guanajuato. The state’s governor, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez, has committed to a thorough investigation into the incident.

The vehicle, containing the bodies of the young male victims, was located on Sunday in a rural area on the outskirts of Celaya. This region has experienced an increase in drug cartel-related violence in recent years. The site is near the Latina University of Mexico, where the victims were enrolled as students. In response to the tragedy, the university announced the suspension of classes on Monday as a day of mourning.

While local media sources have reported that the men were shot, official confirmation from prosecutors has not been provided yet.

In a related incident in June, a car bomb, allegedly set by a drug cartel targeting law enforcement in Celaya, resulted in the death of a National Guard officer. Reports suggest that National Guard officers were responding to a tip about a suspicious car, which exploded as they approached it. The Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, engaged in a longstanding conflict with the Jalisco cartel over territorial control in Guanajuato, is believed to be responsible for the bombing.
