The Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended an 18-year-old housewife, Khadija Adamu, for the alleged culpable homicide of her 5-year-old stepdaughter, Hafsat Garba. The incident occurred on September 28, 2023, in the Kandahar area of Bauchi. Abdulaziz Adamu, aged 38, reported to the A’ Divisional Police Headquarters that Khadija had beaten Hafsat, resulting in severe injuries.
Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) swiftly responded, taking the victim to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for medical attention. Unfortunately, Hafsat was pronounced dead by the attending physician. Preliminary investigations revealed that Khadija allegedly assaulted the child due to her soiling her clothes.
During interrogation, Khadija confessed to the offense without much argument. The police investigation is ongoing, and once concluded, Khadija will be charged accordingly. Khadija, who is currently four months pregnant, expressed remorse for her actions, stating that she did not intend to kill Hafsat but rather discipline her for soiling herself. She pleaded for forgiveness from those grieving and emphasized that she did not harbor any jealousy or hatred towards the child.
While Khadija acknowledged that the law must take its course, she appealed to the police to allow her to return home to face the challenges of life, as she has another child to care for and is expecting a second. She also sought forgiveness from Nigerians, citing her belief that whatever Allah has destined for a person will come to pass.
