15-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot by Deputy During Family Disturbance in Apple Valley

A 15-year-old boy, identified as Ryan Gainer, was fatally shot by a deputy during a family disturbance in Apple Valley, California. The incident occurred on Saturday, March 9, when authorities were called to a residence in the 13400 block of Iroquois Road. According to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Gainer was suspected of assaulting family members and causing property damage.

Upon the arrival of the first deputy, Gainer, armed with a five-foot-long bladed garden tool, confronted the officer. He raised the sharp end of the tool and proceeded to run towards the deputy. In response, the deputy retreated, but Gainer continued to chase him, attempting to assault him with the bladed end of the tool. At least one deputy then fired their weapon, striking Gainer.

Gainer was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. In a statement released on Sunday, Sheriff Shannon Dicus expressed the need to strengthen the social safety net for individuals experiencing mental illness. He acknowledged the tragic outcome of the incident, extending his condolences to Gainer’s family and the deputies involved.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is urging anyone with information regarding the deputy shooting to contact Detective Shawn Thurman or Sgt. Justin Giles at the Specialized Investigations Division. Anonymous tips can also be provided through We-Tip at 800-78CRIME or www.wetip.com.
