A 10-year-old child led police on a chase with his father in the passenger seat over the weekend in Phoenix, Arizona. The incident occurred around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday when state troopers received reports of a pickup truck speeding and weaving through traffic on the westbound Loop 101 with a child behind the wheel.
State troopers located the truck and initiated a pursuit, which ended when the truck came to a stop in an emergency lane. Upon investigation, state troopers confirmed that a 10-year-old boy was indeed driving the vehicle, with his father, 49-year-old Alvaro Ovando Alvarez, allegedly intoxicated and holding an open bottle of alcohol in the passenger seat.
Authorities ordered the boy to move to the backseat while they apprehended Alvarez. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Alvarez is facing charges of suspicion of endangerment, unlawfully permitting a minor to drive, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
The child is not facing any charges in relation to the incident.
